The Melbourne-based rock music magazine JUKE was established in 1975 by rock journalist Ed Nimmervoll, following the demise of the archetypal 1960s rock journal Go-Set in 1974. Aimed at an audience in their twenties, JUKE emerged when Australian bands such as Skyhooks, Sherbet and Little River Band were dominating the charts and beginning to establish an international reputation.
JUKE originally promoted bands within the Australian music scene but eventually came to represent international acts. JUKE contained music reviews, local and international gig guides as well as music related classifieds. JUKE published articles by Australia's best rock journalists such as Christie Eliezer, and some of the country's most accomplished photographers including Graeme Webber, Bob King, Tony Mott and David Parker.
Collection Holdings
The JUKE Magazine Collection consists of approximately 3,000 files including photographs (both live and publicity shots), press releases, news clippings, correspondence and advertising material documenting almost twenty years of the local and international rock scene. The JUKE Magazine Collection was donated to the Performing Arts Collection by The Age newspaper in 1995.
